The exact parentage of these plants is unknown, but their color and shape rank among the best of all deep-colored Neofinetia backcrosses. Some argue they could be a species, but this isn't very certain. It could be a tetraploid, which results in thick, dark foliage and roots, as well as darker flowers.
The roots are nearly twice as thick as those of the species, and the flowers are an almost solid purple-red. They have a wonderful fragrance, much like the species, and are vigorous growers.
These are divisions of the original ‘Raikoumaru’ — most likely a sibling to ‘Choukou’ and ‘Raikouden’, which share similar coloring. Among them, ‘Raikoumaru’ seems to have the richest color.
